In a bid to ensure water and food security, the Government through Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) continues to building dams in several regions, including Sadawarna Dam in Subang regency, West Java province.
To date, construction progress of the dam that is expected to complete in August this year has reached 83 percent.
Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said that the project aimed at increasing dam capacity that will raise the volume of water supply for irrigation, ensure raw water supply, and serve as flood management.
“The construction of the dam will be followed by construction of irrigation network. Thus, continuous water supply will increase planting seasons from once a year to twice or thrice,” the Minister said as quoted from official website of the Ministry of PUPR on Tuesday (05/17).
The dam which is included in the National Strategic Projects (PSN) is expected to accommodate 44.61 million cubic meters of water to irrigate 4,284 hectares of land in Subang and Indramayu regencies. The dam will also provide clean and raw water with a capacity of 0.36-1 cubic meter per second to Patimban port as well as Subang, Indramayu, and Sumedang regencies, and to provide electricity supply generated from a 2-megawatt hydropower plant.
With an inundation area of 670 hectares, Sadawarna Dam is projected to reduce flood by 26.90 cubic meters per second in three regencies surrounding Cipunagara watershed (Daerah Aliran Sungai – DAS), namely Subang, Sumedang, and Indramayu.
For the record, the construction of Sadawarna Dam was started in November 2018 as one of seven dams in West Java province built during the administration of President Joko Widodo. In 2015, the Government had set a target to build 61 dams throughout the country and included them in National Strategic Projects. (PR of Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing/UN) (RAS/MMB)
